Cultural, landscape and naturalistic assets

The protection and promotion of cultural, landscape and naturalistic assets is an activity of great importance for enriching the heritage of many countries and territories, and a fundamental engine for the economic and social activities present in the most valuable territories regarding these assets.

Climate change, extreme events, geological disasters, but also often – and sometimes above all – human actions put precious historical, naturalistic and landscape places at risk. Policies and strategies to safeguard these assets and promote them with a view to “sustainable tourism and use” must be supported by adequate studies, research and operational applications that allow for optimal synergies between all the players present in the context.

The Venice lagoon, an environment of transition between land and sea, with unique naturalistic, urban and economic peculiarities in the world, is a site of particular interest and in need of care to allow its use and enjoyment by the residents, but also by the whole world community. The richness and diversification of this site is given by the coexistence of the center of Venice with the system of islands, coasts, canals and sandbanks, and the mainland eaves. Landscape in continuous transformation, in which human intervention has interacted with natural modifications for a thousand years.

CORILA has addressed the issues of the lagoon landscape in various projects. In the planning and recovery of the areas facing the inlets, also in relation to the construction of the defense works from high waters; in the requalification and redesign of some mainland areas overlooking the lagoon; in the studies for the new morphological plan of the Venice lagoon; in collaboration with the UNESCO Management Plan of the Venice lagoon; in many other dedicated research projects that have taken place over the past twenty years.

Knowledge, applications, policies, strategies relating to the landscape of the Venice lagoon will be able to find application and replication in many other areas of the world where similar artistic, naturalistic, socio-economic peculiarities can be found.

The Venezia2021 research program has, among others, the objective of developing an integrated system of analysis, evaluation, planning, management and monitoring of the Venetian area and its historical, artistic and cultural heritage, capable of supporting the city and the activities that operate in it, through coordinated adaptation actions that aim to increase sustainability and resilience as a whole. In particular, intervention and maintenance procedures will be developed for the architectural elements and historical materials, which will make it possible to define and implement periodic monitoring of the historical, artistic and cultural heritage present in the lagoon.

According to the European Directive on Maritime Spatial Planning (2014/89 / EU), the underwater cultural heritage can be seen as a purpose, activity and use of the maritime space itself. Maritime spatial planning is implemented through the development, adoption and implementation of one or more plans for its marine waters.

The Plans take into account economic, social and environmental aspects in order to support sustainable development and growth in the maritime sector, applying an ecosystem approach, and to promote the coexistence of relevant activities and relevant uses. Among the activities, uses and interests that the Plans must include is the cultural heritage, in particular submarine. In this context, the main objective of WP 2 of the MSPMED project, of which CORILA is Lead Partned, is to support the definition and implementation of the Maritime Spatial Plans in the Member States involved in the project (IT, SL, GR, Malta, Sp, FR), in line with the objectives pursued under the MSP Directive.

Within the Interreg Italy-Croatia CASCADE project “CoAStal and marine waters integrated monitoring systems for ecosystems proteCtion AnD managemEnt”, CORILA will support IUAV in the development of a series of concerted and coordinated actions to improve knowledge and assess the quality and vulnerability of internal, coastal and marine ecosystems in Italy and Croatia, with the ultimate goal of restoring endangered species and supporting their integrated management.

The LIFE18 NAT / IT / 001020 LIFE FORESTALL project, of which CORILA is Lead Partner, already mentioned in the section “Biology, biodiversity and ecosystem services”, also deals with redeveloping the eco-tourist use of the WWF Oasis, the lagoon landscape ( southern lagoon of Venice) and the cultural and naturalistic resources and heritage of the surrounding hinterland (provinces of Venice, Padua, Treviso), through a network of collaboration with local and regional stakeholders (local authorities, bodies and trade associations, operators and associations of the eco-tourism sector). The aim is to identify possible actions and synergies for a more integrated and sustainable eco-tourist and cultural use of the area, for users of different types, interests and origins, trying to effectively link the territory with the tourist use of the historic city of Venice.

The FRAMESPORT project, coordinated by CORILA and financed under the Interreg Italy-Croatia Program, aims to support and guide the development of the small ports of the Adriatic through the definition of a new strategic framework that tends on the one hand to a homogenization of the structures and services offered, on the other hand to increase their attractiveness and connectivity with the territory.

It is no coincidence, in fact, that the classification of the port realities of Law 84/94 identifies them not so much as separate units that exhaust their functions within the physical space that delimits their boundaries, but rather as “logistic hubs” intimately connected to the territorial context that surrounds them. The project therefore aims to foster and optimize this relationship by enhancing the landscape and the naturalistic and cultural riches through the implementation of sustainable mobility and promoting knowledge in the dedicated web portal that the project is developing, for the purposes of tourist use. more sustainable and aware.
