The UN Oceans Conference (UNOC3), which is currently taking place in Nice, France, provided an opportunity for a bilateral meeting between Pierpaolo Campostrini, the Director of CORILA, and Kamal Kishore, the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General and head of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). The meeting discussed various opportunities for the UNDRR to use Venice as a venue for initiatives aimed at increasing the resilience of coastal cities. Venice’s experience of emerging from frequent flooding can serve as an example and a positive backdrop for developing new adaptation strategies that need to be studied and applied in coastal cities around the world. CORILA collaborates with the Venice Sustainability Foundation (VSF), which was appointed by the Municipality of Venice to oversee the city’s participation in the UNDRR initiative ‘Making Cities Resilient – MCR30’, in which Venice is recognised as a ‘Resilience Hub’.
