VISION RD4SD aimed at ensuring that Europe was able to contribute to a Sustainable Development of the world by formulating policies and decisions based on robust, up to date knowledge of highest scientific quality. The project focused on a dialogue among European science policy-makers, administrators and those funding-policy makers in general, who demand and need solutions from VISION RD4SD. The project developed an overview of how Research and Development in support to a sustainable development were funded, supported and evaluated by science policy. This was done by a number of state of the art studies carried out through desk research and interviews set on country, regional and European scale. The dialogue process consisted of a set of facilitated workshops. The results of these workshops have been synthesised in a shared vision of how to harness Research & Development for Sustainable Development. The final step of the project was to disseminate the results to a broader target group in science policy as well as science communities working in support of Sustainable Development.

VISION RD4SD aimed to ensure that Europe was able to contribute to a sustainable development of the world, by formulating policies and decisions based on robust, up-to-date knowledge. This by developing a shared vision between science funding bodies and national science policy institutions in the European Member States on how best to harness research and development for sustainable development (RD4SD).

    • The joint vision on how to harness RD4SD in Europe as a mid- and long-term orientation.
    • Strategies and road maps for joint EU-wide action as well as initiatives on R&D reform processes to be implemented in the Member States.
    • Recommendations for the further design and integration of RD4SD in Horizon 2020 and for the realisation of the 2020 ERA Vision.

The platform for dialogue and exchange of experiences among science funding bodies, science policy administrations and science ministries represented the focus tool to achieve the Joint vision, to develop the guidelines for reaching it and to provide recommendations to European Community. Through a series of workshops and conferences, that represent the core of the project, the platform offered the opportunity to develop concrete strategies towards harnessing RD4SD on national and European levels.

VISION RD4SD was a network of more than 30 partners and observers from 20 European countries, lead by Forskningsradet For Miljo, Areela Naeringar Och Samhaellsbyggande
