ActionMed aims to support and improve the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive MSFD cycle across the Mediterranean, focusing on the needs of its five steps, in close collaboration with the Regional Sea Convention in the Mediterranean (UNEP/MAP) and its Ecosystem Approach. The project reviewed the initial assessment, the GES (Good Environmental Status) definition and the environmental target setting in 2018 with emphasis on biodiversity; it developed integrated, coordinated and financially sustainable Action Plans (short and mid-term) on a regional level and long-term best practices for monitoring and measures programs; it tested their implementation and finally supported the establishment of an information Management System to fill data gaps related to the Mediterranean marine waters.

The main objective of this project is to support the development of regional action plans and best practices for integrated monitoring programs, coordinated programs of measures and the filling of data gaps of Mediterranean marine waters in order to improve the implementation of the MSFD next steps . In particular the project aims:

a) to tackle the most relevant issues at a regional level, so to enable a systematic solution of current gaps in relation to Articles 8, 9 and 10 of the MSFD building on the ongoing regional and EU work

b) to develop strategies/methodologies for the “in continuum assessment” of the biodiversity indicators

c) to set the basis for a coherent design and implementation of proper MSFD monitoring programs

d) to assist the EU MSs of the Mediterranean basin in their work on the program of measures and where needed, in the development of project and investment plans

e) to establish an information management system to allow the regular up to date of knowledge and data used by the RSCs, the European Environment Agency (EEA) and other interested users

The projects’ outcomes were based on the active participation and consultation of the national policy leads for the MSFD and EcAp (The Ecosystem Approach) ensuring the effective impact and use of the Action Plans on the next phases of the implementation of the MSFD across the Mediterranean on the short, medium and long run.
