Ca’ Foscari University, with 4 faculties and 19 departments, covers many areas of chemistry and environmental sciences; in the area of economics it carries out specific environmental economics studies; in the areas of mathematics and it has access to models and data management instruments.
The University IUAV of Venice (3 faculties and 6 departments) is an international reference point for architecture, history, design and restoration for town and land use planning. It has laboratories for construction science and ancient materials analysis.
Padua University, with 13 faculties and 63 departments, is a world leader in engineering, biology, agricultural sciences, chemistry, mathematics and many other branches of science - not to mention centuries of tradition in law and medicine.
The National Research Council constitutes a research network of centres and institutes, spread throughout Italy and spanning all disciplines. Venice hosts the Institute of Marine Sciences and the Institute for Dynamic of Environmental Processes. Other institutes concerned with the lagoon are in Padua and Bologna. CNR has special equipment, including an oceanographic ship and an oceanographic monitoring platform situated 8 miles offshore.
The National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics conducts pure and applied research in earth and marine sciences, especially as regards interactions between the marine and ocean environments with the atmosphere and the lithosphere. Other research interests include the influence of geodynamic and hydrodynamic phenomena on the environment and the development of geophysical data collection, analysis, archiving and interpretation techniques.
